On 23 January 2002, the long waited new joint branch of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) was inaugurated at Singapore.
The Royal Institution of Naval Architects and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology are the oldest professional institutions in the world, serving the members of the naval architectural, marine engineering and other maritime professional worldwide. Both are truly international organizations, which happened to have their headquarters in London. Neither makes any distinction between members in the United Kingdom and Uruguay, or between those in Singapore or Scotland. Membership implies the achievement of the highest standards of professional competence and integrity that are recognized throughout the global maritime industry. An equally important role of both institutions is to assist their members in maintaining those standards, by providing access to up-to-date information on developments in the maritime industry. Both institutions achieve this through their technical publications, conferences and of course through the technical meetings of their joint branches.
As separate professional institutions, the RINA and the IMarEST are able to identify and respond to the specific needs of their members. However, both institutions recognize that those interests overlap and that close cooperation between the two institutions is of benefit to members of both. Nowhere is that close cooperation better demonstrated that in the Joint Branches”…..RINA Affairs, March 2002.
